Gihtsejiegŋa

Gihtsejiegŋa (also spelled Gihtsejiehkna) is a glacier located in the Scandinavian Mountains of northern Sweden. It lies within the county of Norrbotten, specifically within the municipality of Kiruna. Gihtsejiegŋa is part of the larger Kebnekaise massif, home to Sweden's highest peaks. As a glacier, Gihtsejiegŋa is composed of compacted snow and ice, and it exhibits slow but continuous movement due to gravity. The melting of Gihtsejiegŋa, like many glaciers worldwide, is affected by climate change and has been observed in recent decades. The glacier's meltwater contributes to the local hydrological systems, feeding streams and rivers. Due to its location in a mountainous and arctic environment, access to Gihtsejiegŋa is challenging and generally requires hiking or skiing. The glacier's name originates from the Sami language.
