George Hoadley (Ohio politician)
George Hoadley (August 1, 1826 – August 26, 1902) was an American politician and jurist who served as the 32nd Governor of Ohio from 1884 to 1886. He was a Democrat who advocated for reform and opposed machine politics.
Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Hoadley graduated from Western Reserve College and Harvard Law School. He moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he practiced law and became active in local politics. Before becoming governor, he served as a judge on the Superior Court of Cincinnati.
As governor, Hoadley focused on issues such as tax reform and regulation of railroads. He also championed civil service reform. His efforts were met with resistance from both Republicans and conservative Democrats, contributing to his defeat in the 1885 gubernatorial election.
Following his time as governor, Hoadley resumed his legal practice, eventually moving to New York City. He remained active in civic affairs and continued to advocate for reform causes. He died in Watkins Glen, New York, in 1902. His legacy includes his contributions to legal and political reform in Ohio.
