Stagira (ancient city)

Stagira (Ancient Greek: Στάγειρα, Stagēira) was an ancient Greek city located on the coast of the Strymonic Gulf in Chalcidice, Macedonia. It is notable primarily as the birthplace of Aristotle, one of the most influential figures in Western philosophy and science.

History:

Founded by colonists from Andros, Stagira's early history is relatively obscure. It participated in the conflicts of ancient Greece, at times allying with Athens and at other times with its rivals. Its strategic location on the coast gave it importance in trade and maritime affairs. During the Peloponnesian War, it sided with Sparta, leading to its destruction by Athenian forces under the command of Cleon in 424 BC. However, it was subsequently rebuilt.
