Gander (dog)

Gander, often referred to as "Gander the Dog," was a Newfoundland dog recognized for his service and sacrifice during the Battle of Hong Kong in World War II. He served as a mascot with the Royal Rifles of Canada.

During intense fighting, Gander is credited with saving the lives of several Canadian soldiers on multiple occasions. Notably, he is said to have retrieved a live grenade that had landed near a group of wounded soldiers, picking it up and running with it away from the men before it detonated. This act cost him his life.

Gander was posthumously awarded the Dickin Medal in 2000, the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross, for his bravery and devotion. His actions are remembered as a symbol of courage and loyalty in the face of overwhelming odds. He is considered a national hero in Canada and a testament to the bond between humans and animals in wartime. His name is enshrined on the Animals in War Memorial in London.
