GE U30C

The GE U30C is a 3,000 horsepower (2,200 kW) diesel-electric locomotive produced by General Electric between 1966 and 1976. It is a member of GE's Universal series of locomotives, designed for both freight and passenger service.

Key features of the U30C include its four-axle (B-B) configuration, a GE 7FDL-16 diesel engine, and a relatively high horsepower rating for the era. The "U" in the designation indicates "Universal" series, the "30" signifies 3,000 horsepower, and the "C" denotes that it has six-wheel trucks, but only four powered axles (B-B instead of C-C). This configuration allowed for improved adhesion on lighter branch lines while still providing substantial pulling power.

The U30C was purchased by numerous railroads across North America, including the Santa Fe, Burlington Northern, Frisco, and Penn Central, among others. It was primarily used in general freight service, but could also be found handling unit trains and some passenger duties.

Over time, many U30Cs were retired, rebuilt, or sold to smaller railroads. The advent of more powerful and fuel-efficient locomotives led to their gradual decline in mainline service. Some U30Cs continue to operate today in short line or industrial settings.
