First Days (Modern Family)
"First Days" is the collective title of two episodes of the American television sitcom Modern Family, both exploring the challenges and milestones associated with the "first day" experiences for the show's characters. The first episode, titled "First Days," is the first episode of the fourth season, originally airing on September 26, 2012. The second episode, titled "First Day at School," is the first episode of the eighth season, originally airing on September 21, 2016.
Both episodes revolve around similar themes: the anxiety, excitement, and often humorous mishaps that occur when children (and sometimes adults) embark on new beginnings, such as starting a new school year, a new job, or a new phase of life. The episodes often feature parallel storylines involving different members of the extended Pritchett-Delgado-Dunphy family, allowing for a broad exploration of the "first day" experience from various perspectives.
Common plot points and themes explored in these episodes include: parental anxieties about their children's well-being and success, the children's (and adults') struggles to fit in or make a good impression, unexpected challenges and embarrassing moments, and ultimately, the importance of family support and encouragement in navigating these new experiences. The episodes often utilize the show's signature mockumentary style to comedic effect, capturing the characters' inner thoughts and anxieties through direct-to-camera interviews.
