Copitz
Copitz is a small village located in the municipality of Lohsa, in the district of Bautzen, Saxony, Germany. It is situated in the Lusatian Lake District, a region characterized by former open-cast mining areas that have been converted into artificial lakes.
The village is part of the Sorbian settlement area in Upper Lusatia, and as such, the Sorbian language and culture are still present in the region. The Sorbian name for Copitz is "Kopcice".
Historically, the village's economy was largely based on agriculture and forestry. However, with the expansion of lignite mining in the area during the 20th century, the landscape and economy of Copitz and its surrounding region were significantly altered. The subsequent decline of the mining industry after German reunification led to efforts to revitalize the region through tourism and the development of recreational activities around the newly created lakes.
