Reuben, Reuben (opera)

Reuben, Reuben is an opera in three acts composed by Mark Blitzstein, with a libretto by the composer. It is based on the novel Reuben, Reuben by Herman Melville, which was itself loosely based on the life of the real-life American traveller, Rev. John Chester.

The opera premiered on October 18, 1955, at the Shubert Theatre in Boston. The original production was directed by Robert Lewis and featured choreography by Anna Sokolow. The role of Reuben was played by Eddie Albert.

The story revolves around the character of Reuben, an American traveler and sometime preacher, who roams the world encountering various characters and situations. He seeks to spread love and understanding, often facing challenges and disillusionment along the way. Blitzstein's opera, though generally well-regarded, did not achieve lasting popular success. However, it stands as a notable example of American opera from the mid-20th century. It is considered a significant work in Blitzstein's oeuvre, showcasing his characteristic blend of social commentary, lyrical melody, and theatrical flair.
