Jessica (miniseries)
Jessica is an American television miniseries that aired on ABC in two parts on May 15 and 16, 1996. Based on the novel of the same name by Bryce Courtenay, the miniseries tells the story of Jessica Bergman, a young woman living in rural Australia during the early 20th century. Jessica is caught in a web of prejudice and injustice when she falls in love with a Chinese man, Ah Sing.
The miniseries explores themes of racism, social injustice, forbidden love, and the struggles of women in a patriarchal society. It depicts the hardships faced by Chinese immigrants in Australia during this period and the discriminatory laws and attitudes they endured. Jessica's fight for her relationship and her determination to challenge the prevailing social norms form the core of the narrative.
The production was filmed on location in Australia and starred Leelee Sobieski as Jessica Bergman and Sam Hui as Ah Sing. Craig McLachlan, John Bach, and Peter McEvoy also starred in prominent roles.
