USS Mayflower (PY-1)
The USS Mayflower (PY-1) was a yacht built in 1896 as Mayflower. She served in the United States Navy during both the Spanish-American War and World War I. Initially commissioned as a patrol yacht (PY), she is most notable for serving as the presidential yacht of the United States from 1921 to 1929, during the administrations of Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover.
Originally built for Ogden Goelet, a wealthy American businessman and yachtsman, Mayflower was purchased by the U.S. Navy in 1898 at the outset of the Spanish-American War. She was armed and used for patrol duty and served as a dispatch boat. After the war, she continued in naval service in various capacities until being decommissioned briefly in 1904, only to be reactivated and placed into presidential service during Theodore Roosevelt's administration.
During her time as presidential yacht, Mayflower hosted numerous dignitaries and played a role in important political and diplomatic events. She was a symbol of American power and prestige, and provided a luxurious venue for official functions and personal relaxation for the President.
Following her service as presidential yacht, Mayflower underwent several changes in ownership and use, including service as a merchant marine training ship and various private endeavors. Attempts at preservation have been made over the years, with varying degrees of success. Her legacy as a presidential yacht ensures her continued recognition in American naval history.
