Field marshal (Thailand)

A Field marshal (Thai: จอมพล; RTGS: Chom Phon) is the highest military rank in the Royal Thai Army. It is equivalent to a five-star general in other armed forces. The rank is purely honorary, and has been awarded almost exclusively to members of the Thai Royal Family and prominent political figures, particularly those who have held the position of Minister of Defence or Prime Minister. It is rarely conferred upon career military officers.

The rank insignia for a Field marshal in Thailand consists of five stars arranged in a pentagonal pattern, worn on the shoulder boards or collar tabs of the uniform. A stylized royal crown may also be included above the stars.

While the rank officially still exists within the Royal Thai Army's structure, it has not been awarded since 1988. The practice of awarding such high ranks to individuals primarily for political or symbolic reasons has become less common in recent decades.
