Nieuwe Kerk (Haarlem)

The Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) in Haarlem, Netherlands, is a former Protestant church located on the Nieuwe Groenmarkt. It is one of the landmark buildings of the city and is notable for its historical and architectural significance.

Construction of the Nieuwe Kerk began in the 14th century, though the building evolved through numerous phases, resulting in a structure that reflects various architectural styles, primarily Gothic. It served as a Roman Catholic church dedicated to Saint Anne until the Protestant Reformation.

Following the Alteration (Alteratie) of Haarlem in 1578, the Nieuwe Kerk was taken over by Protestants and became one of Haarlem's main Protestant churches.

Perhaps the most notable feature of the Nieuwe Kerk is its large, intricately carved wooden pulpit, considered a masterpiece of Dutch Baroque craftsmanship. The church also housed a significant organ.

The Nieuwe Kerk ceased to function as a church in 1980. Today, the building is used as a cultural center and exhibition space, hosting concerts, art exhibitions, and other events.
