Field Day (Marshall Crenshaw album)

Field Day is the third studio album by American singer-songwriter Marshall Crenshaw, released in 1983. The album marked a significant departure from Crenshaw's earlier, more straightforward power-pop sound, incorporating a harder-edged, almost garage rock production style.

Produced by Steve Lillywhite, known for his work with U2 and XTC, Field Day features a more aggressive and experimental sonic palette than Crenshaw's previous albums. This included the use of synthesizers, echo, and unconventional drum sounds.

The album's lyrics explore themes of disillusionment, social commentary, and personal relationships. Notable tracks include "Whenever You're on My Mind," a minor chart hit, "Try," and "Monday Morning Rock."

Despite initial critical acclaim for its ambition and sonic experimentation, Field Day proved to be commercially disappointing compared to Crenshaw's earlier work. Some fans and critics found the production style jarring and a detraction from Crenshaw's songwriting strengths. However, it has since been re-evaluated by many as a bold and interesting entry in Crenshaw's discography.

The album's cover art features a photograph of Crenshaw playing guitar in a field, with a blurred and distorted effect, reflecting the album's unconventional sound.
