Edward T. Lewis (college president)

Edward T. Lewis (born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on December 21, 1935, died December 1, 2012) was an American academic and president of St. Augustine's College (now St. Augustine's University) in Raleigh, North Carolina, from 1999 to 2014. He is credited with significant improvements to the college's financial stability, academic programs, and physical infrastructure during his tenure.

Lewis held a bachelor's degree from Morehouse College, a master's degree from Atlanta University, and a doctorate from Syracuse University. Before St. Augustine's, he held various administrative and academic positions at institutions including Clark College, Voorhees College, Knoxville College, and Kentucky State University.

During his presidency at St. Augustine's, Lewis focused on strengthening the college's accreditation, increasing enrollment, and securing funding for new construction and renovations. Under his leadership, the college developed new academic programs, enhanced its technology infrastructure, and improved its graduation rate. He also spearheaded fundraising initiatives to increase the college's endowment.

Lewis retired as president of St. Augustine's University in 2014. He received numerous awards and recognitions for his contributions to higher education, particularly for his work at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
