Dzhulbars
Dzhulbars was a service dog, specifically an Alsatian (German Shepherd), who served with the Soviet Red Army during World War II. Dzhulbars is credited with detecting over 7,000 mines and other explosives during the period from 1941 to 1945. His efforts were instrumental in clearing areas liberated from Nazi occupation.
Dzhulbars gained considerable fame and became a symbol of canine heroism in the Soviet Union. He was known for his exceptional sense of smell and his dedication to his duties. He participated in the demining of several important locations, significantly reducing casualties among Soviet troops and civilians.
As the war drew to a close, Dzhulbars was injured and unable to participate in the Victory Parade in Moscow. However, Joseph Stalin reportedly ordered that Dzhulbars be carried through Red Square on a stretcher, draped with his military coat, so that he could be honored alongside the soldiers he had helped protect. While details surrounding the carrying of Dzhulbars vary in different accounts, the story underscores the high regard in which the dog was held.
After the war, Dzhulbars continued to live and was eventually used for breeding. He is considered a significant figure in the history of Soviet military canines.
