312th Division (Vietnam)

The 312th Division was a major infantry division of the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN), the military force of North Vietnam during the Vietnam War (also known as the Second Indochina War). Formed in 1950, it was a veteran unit that participated in several key battles throughout the conflict.

The division played a significant role in the First Indochina War against the French, notably in the Battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954, where its troops were instrumental in the siege and eventual defeat of the French garrison.

During the Vietnam War, the 312th Division was active in various campaigns, including engagements in the northern regions of South Vietnam. Information concerning its precise deployments and battles fought varies, due to the often-clandestine nature of the PAVN's operations. The division's strength typically consisted of several infantry regiments, supported by artillery and other support elements. Like other PAVN divisions, the 312th was known for its discipline, tenacity, and ability to operate in difficult terrain. After the war, it continued to serve as a part of the unified Vietnamese military. Its current status and composition are subject to change and further research.
