Canisteo (village), New York
Canisteo is a village located in the town of Canisteo, Steuben County, New York, United States. The population was 2,270 at the 2010 census.
Geography:
Canisteo village is situated in the valley of the Canisteo River. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.
History:
The area was originally inhabited by Native Americans. The village was incorporated in 1847. The name "Canisteo" is derived from a Native American word meaning "board on the water," possibly referring to a raft or a canoe. Canisteo developed as a regional agricultural center and later benefited from the arrival of the railroad.
Demographics:
As of the census of 2010, there were 2,270 people, 883 households, and 593 families residing in the village. The racial makeup of the village was 96.9% White, 0.9% African American, 0.1% Native American, 0.6% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.5% of the population.

The village is governed by a mayor and a board of trustees.
Education:
The village is served by the Canisteo-Greenwood Central School District.
