Black Mountain (Michigan)
Black Mountain is a prominent hill located in Cheboygan County, Michigan, United States. Despite its name, it is not a true mountain but rather a high point within the northern Michigan landscape. Black Mountain rises approximately 300 feet above the surrounding terrain, offering panoramic views of the surrounding forests and lakes.
The area surrounding Black Mountain is popular for outdoor recreation, particularly hiking, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing. The Black Mountain Recreation Area, managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), encompasses a significant portion of the land and provides trails and facilities for these activities.
Historically, the area was important for logging operations. Evidence of this past industry can still be found in the landscape. More recently, the area has become increasingly significant for wildlife conservation and habitat management.
The exact origin of the name "Black Mountain" is debated, but possible explanations include the dark appearance of the forests covering the hill from a distance, or a reference to the dark soil in the area.
The DNR maintains several marked trails on and around Black Mountain, catering to various skill levels. The area is known for its diverse flora and fauna, including various bird species and common Michigan wildlife.
