Destiny (ISS module)

Destiny is the primary research laboratory for U.S. payloads on the International Space Station (ISS). It was berthed to the Unity module during STS-98 in February 2001. Destiny is a pressurized, cylindrical module constructed primarily of aluminum.

Measuring 8.5 meters (28 feet) long and 4.3 meters (14 feet) in diameter, Destiny provides a working environment for astronauts conducting a wide range of scientific experiments in fields such as medicine, engineering, biotechnology, physics, and materials science. It has a volume of 106 cubic meters (3,700 cubic feet).

The module is equipped with 13 International Standard Payload Racks (ISPRs), six on each side and one on the floor, which can house experiment equipment and support systems. These racks provide power, cooling, data transfer, and other resources necessary for conducting research.

Destiny is connected to the ISS power, life support, and communications systems. It plays a crucial role in supporting long-duration human spaceflight by providing a habitable and well-equipped research environment. The module also houses critical life support equipment and serves as a control center for various ISS operations.

The name "Destiny" was chosen to symbolize the future of human space exploration and the potential for scientific discovery in space. The successful deployment and operation of Destiny have significantly enhanced the ISS's research capabilities, allowing for advancements in numerous scientific disciplines.
