Richard Burke (Irish politician)

Richard Burke (1932-2016) was an Irish Fine Gael politician who served as a Teachta Dála (TD) and European Commissioner.

Born in New York City, Burke was educated at University College Dublin. He entered national politics in 1969, winning a seat for Dublin South County in Dáil Éireann. He held his seat until 1977, serving as Minister for Education in the Liam Cosgrave-led government from 1973 to 1977. During his tenure as Minister for Education, Burke oversaw significant educational reforms.

In 1977, he was appointed as Ireland's European Commissioner, serving under the Jenkins Commission and later the Thorn Commission. His portfolios included taxation, consumer affairs, and transport. He remained a Commissioner until 1982, resigning to return to Irish politics.

Burke was elected again to Dáil Éireann in the 1982 general election for Dublin West. He did not contest the November 1982 general election, ending his political career. After leaving politics, he held various business positions. Richard Burke died in March 2016.
