David Lodge (author)

David Lodge (born 28 January 1935) is a British author and literary critic. He is best known for his comic novels which often satirize academic life and explore themes of faith, language, and literary theory.

Lodge was born in London and educated at University College London. He worked as a lecturer in English Literature at the University of Birmingham from 1960 until his retirement in 2000.

His novels include Changing Places (1975), Small World (1984), Nice Work (1988), Therapy (1995), and Deaf Sentence (2008). Changing Places, Small World, and Nice Work form a loose trilogy known as the "Campus Trilogy," each featuring some of the same characters and exploring different aspects of university life.

Lodge's work is characterized by its wit, intelligence, and accessibility. He often incorporates metafictional elements and uses humor to explore serious themes. He has also written non-fiction works on literary criticism, including The Modes of Modern Writing: Metaphor, Metonymy, and the Typology of Modern Literature (1977) and Consciousness and the Novel (2002).

Lodge has received numerous awards for his writing, including the Whitbread Novel Award and the Hawthornden Prize. He continues to be a significant figure in contemporary British literature.
