Dart gun
A dart gun, also known as a tranquilizer gun, is a specialized air gun or firearm used to inject animals (or, rarely, humans) with tranquilizers, vaccines, or other medications via a dart. The dart is propelled by compressed gas (such as CO2 or air) or a small explosive charge. Dart guns are commonly used in veterinary medicine, wildlife management, and animal research to immobilize animals for examination, relocation, or treatment.
Dart guns vary in size and power, depending on the target animal and the effective range required. The dart itself typically consists of a needle, a syringe body containing the drug, a propellant charge or compressed gas chamber to expel the drug upon impact, and a stabilizer or tailpiece to ensure accurate flight.
The use of dart guns requires specialized training and expertise to ensure the safety of both the animal and the operator. Factors such as the animal's weight, species, and physiological condition must be considered when determining the appropriate dosage of medication. Furthermore, proper dart placement is crucial to avoid injury to the animal.
