1974 FIFA World Cup qualification (UEFA–CONMEBOL play-off)
The 1974 FIFA World Cup qualification (UEFA–CONMEBOL play-off) was a two-legged tie contested between a team from UEFA (Europe) and a team from CONMEBOL (South America) to determine one of the final spots in the 1974 FIFA World Cup held in West Germany.
The UEFA representative was the Soviet Union, who had finished second in UEFA Group 9 behind the Republic of Ireland. Due to the structure of qualification, group runners-up were not guaranteed a play-off; the Soviet Union's record was deemed best among the runners-up from UEFA.
The CONMEBOL representative was Chile, who finished second in CONMEBOL Group 3 behind Uruguay. Similar to the UEFA structure, not all second-placed teams were guaranteed a play-off. Chile advanced as the CONMEBOL nation in the play-off.
The first leg, held in Moscow, ended in a 0-0 draw.
The second leg was originally scheduled to be held in Santiago, Chile. However, following the 1973 Chilean coup d'état, the Soviet Union refused to play in Chile due to the political situation and human rights concerns. FIFA ruled that the match should be played in Chile, and when the Soviet Union refused to participate, FIFA awarded the match, and therefore qualification for the 1974 World Cup, to Chile by default. Chile subsequently played a symbolic match at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago without Soviet participation, scoring a single goal into an empty net, officially recording the score as 2-0.
