Daniel McIntyre (politician)
Daniel McIntyre (born July 12, 1852, Brooke Township, Lambton County, Ontario – died January 15, 1934, Winnipeg, Manitoba) was a prominent Canadian educator and politician in Manitoba. He served as Superintendent of Winnipeg Schools from 1885 to 1929, significantly shaping the province's educational system.
McIntyre received his early education in Ontario and later attended the Toronto Normal School. Before moving to Winnipeg, he served as a school principal in Ontario. His appointment as Superintendent of Winnipeg Schools marked the beginning of a long and influential career in Manitoba education.
During his tenure as Superintendent, McIntyre oversaw significant growth and modernization of the Winnipeg school system. He implemented progressive educational reforms, including the introduction of kindergarten programs, the expansion of vocational training, and the establishment of specialized schools for students with special needs. He was a strong advocate for teacher training and professional development, and he played a key role in establishing the Manitoba Teachers' Society.
Beyond his contributions to education, McIntyre was also involved in civic affairs. He served as a member of the Winnipeg City Council from 1906 to 1907. While his political career was brief, it reflected his broader commitment to public service and the well-being of the Winnipeg community.
Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute in Winnipeg is named in his honor, a testament to his enduring legacy as a leader in Manitoba education. His impact on the province's schools and the lives of countless students is widely recognized. He is buried in Brookside Cemetery in Winnipeg.
