Carl Rose (cartoonist)

Carl Rose (1903-1971) was an American cartoonist best known for his work in The New Yorker magazine. He created numerous single-panel cartoons, often featuring witty and observational humor about upper-middle-class life and social interactions.

Rose was a regular contributor to The New Yorker for several decades, starting in the 1920s. His cartoons were characterized by a distinctive, clean drawing style and a talent for capturing the nuances of human behavior. He often employed a simple, direct approach to his gags, letting the situation and the dialogue carry the humor.

A particularly famous cartoon attributed to Rose (though its exact authorship is debated, with E.B. White also sometimes credited) features a mother telling her daughter, "It's broccoli, dear." This cartoon has become iconic, representing the challenges of parenting and the universality of childhood food aversions.

Beyond The New Yorker, Rose also worked on advertising campaigns and other commercial art projects. His influence can be seen in the work of many subsequent cartoonists who adopted a similar style of sophisticated, understated humor.
