COPE (Boy Scouts of America)
COPE, an acronym for Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience, is a program offered by the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) designed to promote teamwork, problem-solving, and personal growth through physically and mentally engaging activities. COPE courses are typically held at BSA camps and council properties, and they feature a series of obstacles and challenges designed to be completed by a group.
The COPE program is intended to build confidence, communication skills, leadership skills, and trust among participants. Activities range from low-course elements conducted close to the ground, emphasizing group initiatives and communication, to high-course elements involving ropes, cables, and climbing, requiring participants to work together to overcome fear and complete the challenge.
Participation in COPE requires trained and certified facilitators who guide the participants through the activities, ensuring safety and providing encouragement. The program is adaptable for various age groups and skill levels, catering to both youth members and adults. The principles learned during COPE activities are intended to be transferable to other areas of life, fostering a sense of accomplishment and a greater ability to work effectively within a team.
