Derwent Reservoir (North East England)
Derwent Reservoir is a large reservoir located in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in County Durham, North East England. It impounds the River Derwent, a tributary of the River Tyne.
The reservoir was constructed between 1960 and 1967 to supply drinking water to the heavily populated areas of Tyne and Wear, Teesside, and County Durham. It is operated by Northumbrian Water.
The reservoir is approximately 3.5 miles (5.6 km) long and covers an area of over 1,000 acres (400 hectares). Its capacity is approximately 11,000 million gallons (50,000,000 cubic meters).
Derwent Reservoir is a popular recreational destination, offering opportunities for sailing, fishing, windsurfing, and birdwatching. There are also several walking and cycling trails around the reservoir.
The surrounding area is characterized by moorland, farmland, and woodland. The reservoir is an important habitat for a variety of wildlife, including birds such as ospreys, curlews, and lapwings.
