North China Sea Fleet (China Marine Surveillance)

The North China Sea Fleet is one of the three fleets of the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) of China. Its area of responsibility primarily covers the Bohai Sea and the northern portion of the Yellow Sea. Its headquarters are located in Qingdao, Shandong Province.

The China Marine Surveillance (CMS) was formerly a maritime law enforcement agency of the People's Republic of China. Although organizationally distinct from the PLAN, the CMS vessels often operate in close proximity and coordination with the naval fleet, contributing to China's overall maritime presence and enforcement capabilities in the region. Its primary functions included safeguarding China's maritime rights and interests, conducting law enforcement patrols, and managing marine resources.

In 2013, the CMS was integrated into the China Coast Guard (CCG) under the newly formed State Oceanic Administration (SOA). This reorganization aimed to streamline maritime law enforcement and resource management efforts, consolidating the capabilities of various agencies under a single command structure. Although the CMS no longer exists as a separate entity, its former responsibilities and assets have been absorbed into the CCG, which continues to play a significant role in China's maritime strategy within the North China Sea area and beyond. The CCG still coordinates with the PLAN, including the North China Sea Fleet, on certain operations.
