Leonard Isitt (aviator)

Leonard Isitt (1891 – 1976) was a pioneering New Zealand aviator and airline executive. He is best known for his instrumental role in establishing and developing Tasman Empire Airways Limited (TEAL), which later became Air New Zealand.

Born in Christchurch, New Zealand, Isitt initially pursued a career in the postal service. His interest in aviation led him to obtain a pilot's license in 1930. He quickly became a prominent figure in the New Zealand aviation scene, advocating for the development of airmail services and passenger transport.

In 1936, Isitt was appointed as the general manager of Tasman Empire Airways Limited (TEAL), a joint venture between New Zealand, Australia, and the United Kingdom to provide air service across the Tasman Sea. Under his leadership, TEAL successfully established regular flights between New Zealand and Australia using flying boats. Isitt was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his commitment to safety. He remained with TEAL/Air New Zealand until his retirement in 1968, overseeing its expansion and modernization into a jet-age airline.

Isitt was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1953 for his services to aviation. He is remembered as a key figure in the history of New Zealand aviation and a significant contributor to the development of international air travel in the South Pacific region.
