CKNX-TV

CKNX-TV was a television station based in Wingham, Ontario, Canada. It was a CBC Television affiliate serving Southwestern Ontario.

History

CKNX-TV signed on the air on March 7, 1955. It was owned and operated by Blackburn Radio, which also owned CKNX radio. The station’s call letters were derived from those of its sister radio station. Initially, CKNX-TV broadcast on VHF channel 8.

In 1961, the station moved to VHF channel 12. This was done to allow CFPL-TV in London to increase its broadcasting power without causing interference.

Throughout its history, CKNX-TV provided local news, weather, and community programming to the region. It also carried CBC network programming.

Closure

In 2002, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) announced that it would not renew CKNX-TV's affiliation agreement. This decision was based on the CBC's strategy to consolidate its owned-and-operated stations.

CKNX-TV ceased broadcasting on August 31, 2002. The station's transmitter and tower were subsequently dismantled. The CKNX-TV studios in Wingham were repurposed.

Legacy

CKNX-TV is remembered for its role in providing local television service to Southwestern Ontario for nearly five decades. Its closure marked the end of an era for local broadcasting in the region. While the station is no longer on the air, its call letters and history remain a part of the area's broadcasting heritage.
