Dhangar

The Dhangar are a pastoral community traditionally found in the Indian state of Maharashtra, as well as neighboring states like Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Goa. They are primarily known as shepherds, herdsmen, and farmers, and are often associated with a nomadic or semi-nomadic lifestyle.

The Dhangar community is further subdivided into various sub-castes or groups, each historically associated with particular occupations and territories. These groups include, but are not limited to, the Hatkar Dhangar (traditionally sheep herders and soldiers), the Mendhe Dhangar (sheep herders), the Gavli Dhangar (cattle herders), and the Khutekar Dhangar (blanket weavers).

Historically, the Dhangar community has faced socio-economic challenges and has been recognized as a socially and educationally backward class in Maharashtra. They have been involved in advocacy for improved access to education, employment, and political representation.

The Dhangar's traditional way of life is closely tied to the land and livestock. They often migrate with their herds in search of grazing pastures, following seasonal rainfall patterns. This pastoral lifestyle has been significantly impacted by factors such as deforestation, land scarcity, and changing agricultural practices.

The Dhangar community's cultural traditions include unique folk songs, dances, and religious practices, often centered around the worship of nature and ancestral deities. They have a distinct cultural identity that has been passed down through generations.
