American Football Conference (1959–1961)
American Football Conference (AFC) (1959–1961) was a short-lived professional American football league that existed from 1959 to 1961. It should not be confused with the current American Football Conference, which is one of the two conferences of the National Football League (NFL).
The 1959-1961 AFC was formed as a rival to the NFL, initially featuring teams that were either established or newly formed. Its existence was brief and ultimately unsuccessful, with the league folding after only three seasons due to financial difficulties and a lack of competitive parity with the more established NFL. Details regarding specific teams, players, and league rules are scarce in readily available historical records, making comprehensive information difficult to obtain. Further research in specialized archives might yield more detailed information. The league's short lifespan and relative obscurity have contributed to limited documentation. The reasons for its failure are likely multifaceted, including intense competition from the NFL, inadequate funding, and difficulties in attracting and retaining top-tier talent. While some anecdotal information exists, a fully detailed history remains elusive.
