Burma (elephant)
Burma was a female Asian elephant known for her long service in the Milwaukee County Zoo in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was born in 1962 and arrived at the zoo in 1964. Burma was a popular and well-loved animal, known for her intelligence and gentle nature.
Throughout her time at the zoo, Burma participated in various educational programs and demonstrations, helping to educate visitors about elephants and conservation. She was a significant presence in the zoo's elephant exhibit and a favorite among both staff and visitors.
Burma was known to be highly trainable and responsive to her keepers. She participated in routines such as bathing, foot care, and veterinary examinations. Her calm demeanor made these procedures easier and safer.
Burma lived to be 50 years old, exceeding the median life expectancy for Asian elephants in captivity. She was euthanized in December 2012 due to age-related health issues. Her death was widely mourned in the Milwaukee community.
