Breakaway (dance)
The Breakaway is a social dance that emerged during the swing era, particularly in the late 1920s and early 1930s. It is considered a predecessor to and component of Lindy Hop, Charleston, and other swing dances. The Breakaway is characterized by moments where the partners separate from the closed position (where they hold hands or maintain body contact) and dance independently, often improvising steps and movements. This separation allows for individual expression and energetic displays, before reconnecting with the partner to continue the dance in a closed position. The Breakaway represents a key development in swing dance, enabling more dynamic and athletic movements than earlier partnered dances. It's a crucial element in understanding the evolution of swing dance and its playful, energetic character.
