Borj Sud
Borj Sud (also sometimes rendered as Burj Sud, particularly in English transliterations) is a historical fortress located in Sfax, Tunisia. It translates literally as "South Tower" or "Southern Tower" in Arabic.
The fortress is a significant part of the fortifications surrounding the medina (old city) of Sfax. It was constructed during the Aghlabid period (9th century), although it has undergone numerous modifications and expansions throughout its history by different ruling dynasties, including the Zirids, Almohads, and Hafsids, as well as during Spanish and French occupations. These alterations reflect the changing defensive needs and architectural styles of each era.
Borj Sud played a critical role in the defense of Sfax, providing a strategic vantage point for observing and controlling access to the southern approaches of the city. It housed garrisons and served as a platform for defensive artillery.
Today, Borj Sud is a protected historical monument. It serves as a reminder of the city's rich history and its strategic importance in the region. It is open to the public and offers visitors panoramic views of the medina and the surrounding area. The fortress often hosts cultural events and exhibitions. Its architecture showcases a blend of Islamic and European influences, reflecting the diverse history of Sfax.
