Hits

The term "hits" in the context of web servers and analytics refers to a request for a file from a web server. Each time a browser or other client requests a file, such as an HTML page, an image, a CSS stylesheet, a JavaScript file, or any other resource, it generates a "hit" on the server. A single webpage can generate multiple hits due to the numerous associated resources it uses.

While "hits" were once a common metric for website traffic, they are now considered a less reliable indicator of actual website usage than metrics such as page views, unique visitors, and sessions. This is because a single user visiting a single webpage can generate numerous hits, making the metric susceptible to inflation and misrepresentation of actual user engagement. Therefore, modern web analytics focuses on more granular and user-centric metrics to accurately measure website performance and user behavior.
