Montrose railway station (Caledonian Railway)

Montrose railway station (Caledonian Railway) refers to the original railway station serving the town of Montrose, Angus, Scotland. It was built and operated by the Caledonian Railway, opening in 1848 as part of their main line north along the Scottish east coast. This station was distinct from the later Montrose North British Railway station, which was built by a rival company.

The Caledonian Railway's Montrose station provided crucial transport links for the town, facilitating the movement of passengers and goods. It connected Montrose to major cities like Aberdeen, Perth, and Glasgow, contributing significantly to the economic development of the region.

The station buildings typically included a station master's house, waiting rooms, booking offices, and goods sheds. Sidings were also present to accommodate freight traffic. Significant engineering work was required to construct the line through Montrose, including embankments and bridges.

Following the 1923 Grouping, the Caledonian Railway was absorbed into the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS). The station continued to operate under the LMS and subsequently under British Railways after nationalisation in 1948. While the physical station infrastructure has been altered over time, the site served by the Caledonian Railway station remains in use as part of the current Montrose railway station.
