Bob Lanier (politician)

Bob Lanier (August 22, 1925 – December 3, 2014) was an American politician and businessman who served as the 58th Mayor of Houston, Texas, from 1992 to 1998.

Lanier was a prominent figure in Houston politics for many years before becoming mayor. A lawyer and real estate developer, he had previously served as chairman of the Texas Transportation Commission under Governor Mark White. In this role, he oversaw significant infrastructure projects and development across the state.

As mayor of Houston, Lanier focused on improving the city's infrastructure, particularly its streets and drainage systems. He initiated the "ReBuild Houston" program, a large-scale public works project aimed at addressing chronic flooding and traffic congestion. He also prioritized public safety, working to reduce crime rates during his tenure. Lanier was known for his pragmatic approach and ability to build consensus among diverse groups.

Before entering public service, Lanier was a successful businessman, with interests in real estate, banking, and law. He was active in the Houston community, serving on various boards and committees.
