Nuestro

Nuestro is a Spanish possessive adjective that means "our." It agrees in gender and number with the noun it modifies, not with the possessors (the "we"). It has four forms:

  • Nuestro (masculine singular): Used before a masculine singular noun. Example: Nuestro coche (Our car).
  • Nuestra (feminine singular): Used before a feminine singular noun. Example: Nuestra casa (Our house).
  • Nuestros (masculine plural): Used before a masculine plural noun. Example: Nuestros amigos (Our friends).
  • Nuestras (feminine plural): Used before a feminine plural noun. Example: Nuestras hijas (Our daughters).

The neuter possessive "our" does not exist in Spanish; the corresponding construction must be formulated differently based on context.

In some regions and contexts, especially in more formal settings, the definite article ("el," "la," "los," "las") is used with possessive adjectives. For example, one might say "el nuestro coche" instead of "nuestro coche." However, this usage is generally discouraged in modern prescriptive grammar, except when the possessive adjective is being used as a possessive pronoun or functions as the head of a noun phrase.

As a possessive pronoun, "nuestro," "nuestra," "nuestros," and "nuestras" translate to "ours." They are usually preceded by a definite article ("el," "la," "los," "las") when used as pronouns. Example: El coche rojo es el nuestro (The red car is ours).
