Blagoveshchensk (inhabited locality)
Blagoveshchensk is a city in Russia, and the administrative center of Amur Oblast. It is located at the confluence of the Amur and Zeya Rivers, on the border with China. The city faces the Chinese city of Heihe across the Amur.
History:
Founded in 1856 as Ust-Zeysky military post, it was renamed Blagoveshchenskaya sloboda in 1858 and granted town status as Blagoveshchensk in the same year. The name, meaning "Annunciation," is derived from the Russian Orthodox feast day. Blagoveshchensk played a significant role in the Russian expansion into the Amur region.
