Bis (Scottish band)

Bis were a Scottish indie pop band, formed in 1994 in Glasgow. The band consisted of Amanda MacKinnon (Manda Rin), Steven Clark (Sci-Fi Steven), and John Clark (John Disco). They are notable for achieving mainstream success with their energetic and catchy music, particularly during the mid-to-late 1990s Britpop era, despite their self-proclaimed "bubblegum punk" sound, which often incorporated elements of electronic music and new wave.

Bis achieved notoriety for being the first unsigned band to appear on the BBC's Top of the Pops in 1996, performing their single "Kandy Pop." This appearance propelled them into the public consciousness and led to significant commercial success in the UK and internationally, particularly in Japan.

The band released several albums, including The New Transistor Heroes (1997), Social Dancing (1999), and Return to Central (2001). Their music often explored themes of youth culture, technology, and identity, delivered with a distinctive playful and energetic style.

Bis disbanded in 2003, but reformed in 2009. They released a new album, data01101101data, in 2014 and have continued to perform sporadically since. While not achieving the same level of mainstream success as in their earlier years, they have retained a dedicated cult following and are recognised for their pioneering spirit and contribution to the indie pop scene.
