Bai Yun (politician)

Bai Yun (born 1955) is a former Chinese politician. She served as the Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Taiyuan Municipal Committee, the capital of Shanxi province, from 2006 to 2011. Prior to that, she held various positions within the CPC organization in Shanxi, including roles in the CPC Shanxi Provincial Committee Organization Department.

Bai Yun rose through the ranks of the Communist Party throughout her career. As Party Secretary of Taiyuan, she was the city's top official, wielding significant political power.

In August 2014, Bai Yun was placed under investigation by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI), the party's internal disciplinary body, for suspected "serious violations of discipline and law." This typically refers to corruption-related offenses.

In April 2016, Bai Yun was expelled from the Communist Party and her case was handed over to judicial authorities for prosecution. The investigation revealed that she had abused her position to seek benefits for others in personnel matters and business activities and accepted a large amount of bribes.

In October 2016, Bai Yun was sentenced to 12 years in prison for accepting bribes by the Intermediate People's Court of Xinzhou. She was also fined 2 million yuan. The court ruled that she had shown remorse and had confessed to her crimes, which were considered mitigating factors in her sentencing.

Bai Yun's downfall was part of a broader anti-corruption campaign spearheaded by Xi Jinping after he assumed the leadership of the Communist Party of China in 2012. Her case received significant attention in Chinese media, highlighting the party's efforts to combat corruption at all levels.
