Battle of Alinja (1399)
The Battle of Alinja, fought in 1399, was a significant engagement in the struggle between the Qara Qoyunlu (Black Sheep Turkomans) and the Jalayirid Sultanate for control of Azerbaijan. Alinja Castle, a formidable mountain fortress located near Julfa, served as a crucial strategic point.
The Jalayirids, weakened by internal strife and external pressures from the Timurid Empire, had seen their power steadily decline. Qara Yusuf, the leader of the Qara Qoyunlu, saw an opportunity to expand his influence and challenge Jalayirid dominance. He besieged Alinja Castle, which was then held by a Jalayirid garrison.
The siege lasted for several months. Alinja Castle, known for its strong defenses and ample supplies, proved difficult to capture. However, Qara Yusuf's forces eventually overcame the Jalayirid defenders, either through direct assault, a weakening of the defenses, or potentially through treachery or famine within the castle walls (historical accounts vary on the precise circumstances).
The capture of Alinja Castle marked a turning point in the Qara Qoyunlu's rise to power. It significantly weakened the Jalayirids and paved the way for Qara Yusuf to consolidate his control over Azerbaijan. The victory at Alinja contributed to the eventual decline and collapse of the Jalayirid Sultanate, solidifying the Qara Qoyunlu as a major power in the region.
