Antonio Soto (syndicalist)

Antonio Soto Álvarez (1897 – 1963) was a prominent Spanish anarcho-syndicalist leader and activist, primarily active in Argentina during the early to mid-20th century. He is best known for his instrumental role in organizing and leading powerful labor unions in Patagonia, particularly amongst rural workers and dockworkers.

Soto was born in Galicia, Spain, and emigrated to Argentina in his youth. Inspired by anarchist and syndicalist ideologies, he quickly became involved in labor organizing efforts. He joined the Federación Obrera Regional Argentina (FORA), a major anarcho-syndicalist labor federation, and advocated for direct action, workers' control, and the abolition of the capitalist system.

In Patagonia, Soto played a critical part in the 1920-1922 Patagonian Tragic uprising (also known as the Patagonia Rebelde). He helped to organize strikes and land occupations by rural workers demanding better wages, working conditions, and land access. His leadership and organizational skills were essential in mobilizing and coordinating workers across vast distances.

Following the violent suppression of the Patagonia Rebelde by the Argentine army, where thousands of workers were killed, Soto was imprisoned. Despite facing persecution and imprisonment, he continued to advocate for workers' rights and social justice throughout his life. He remains a significant figure in the history of the Argentine labor movement and a symbol of resistance against exploitation and oppression. His legacy continues to inspire activists and scholars interested in anarcho-syndicalism, labor history, and social movements in Latin America.
