Italian submarine Nereide (1913)
The Nereide was a Nautilus-class submarine built for the Royal Italian Navy (Regia Marina) prior to World War I. She was launched in 1913 and sunk in 1915 by the Austro-Hungarian submarine U-5 in the Adriatic Sea.
Nereide displaced 213 tons surfaced and 270 tons submerged. She was armed with two 450 mm (17.7 in) torpedo tubes and a single 6-pounder (57 mm) deck gun. Her crew complement was typically around 21 officers and enlisted men.
The Nereide primarily conducted patrols in the Adriatic Sea following Italy's entry into World War I in May 1915. She met her demise on August 5, 1915, near the island of Pelagosa (Palagruža), when she was torpedoed by U-5 commanded by Georg Ritter von Trapp. All hands were lost. The wreck of Nereide was located in 2011, lying in approximately 70 meters (230 feet) of water.
