Anthony Grant (basketball)
Anthony Grant (born April 15, 1966) is an American college basketball coach, currently the head coach at the University of Dayton.
Grant played college basketball at the University of Dayton from 1983 to 1987, primarily as a reserve guard. After graduation, he began his coaching career as an assistant at various schools, including Hargrave Military Academy, Charleston Southern, and Stetson.
He gained significant recognition as an assistant coach under Billy Donovan at the University of Florida from 1996 to 2006. During his tenure, Florida won two national championships (2006, 2007).
Grant's first head coaching position was at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) from 2006 to 2009. He led the Rams to three consecutive Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) regular season titles and two NCAA Tournament appearances.
In 2009, Grant was hired as the head coach at the University of Alabama. He coached the Crimson Tide for six seasons, leading them to one NCAA Tournament appearance and one NIT appearance.
Grant returned to the University of Dayton as head coach in 2017. In the 2019-20 season, he guided the Flyers to a 29-2 record and a No. 3 national ranking before the NCAA Tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Obi Toppin, a star player under Grant, won the Naismith College Player of the Year award that season. Grant was named the Naismith College Coach of the Year.
Grant is known for his emphasis on defense and player development. His coaching record demonstrates consistent success in building and maintaining competitive basketball programs.
