Ambassador Theatre (New York City)

The Ambassador Theatre is a Broadway theatre located at 219 West 49th Street in midtown Manhattan, New York City. It is one of the few Broadway houses that are located on 49th Street, rather than on Broadway or one of the cross streets immediately adjacent to it.

The theatre was designed by Herbert J. Krapp and opened on September 25, 1921, with the play Blossom Time. Originally operated by the Shuberts, it has been owned by The Nederlander Organization since 1935.

The Ambassador is a relatively small Broadway theatre, seating 1,125 people. It is known for its intimate atmosphere and excellent sightlines. The interior is decorated in a Spanish style, with arched doorways and ornate plasterwork.

Notable productions at the Ambassador Theatre have included Chicago, which opened there in 2003 and became the longest-running American musical in Broadway history before transferring to the Ambassador's sister theatre, the Marquis, in 2024. Other notable productions include Godspell, Bring in 'da Noise, Bring in 'da Funk, You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, and Company.

The Ambassador Theatre has been designated a New York City Landmark.
