Almandin (horse)
Almandin was a German-bred Thoroughbred racehorse best known for winning the 2016 Melbourne Cup. Bred by Gestüt Schlenderhan, he was foaled in 2009.
His racing career began in Germany, where he demonstrated stamina and staying power, characteristics which later proved crucial in the prestigious Melbourne Cup. He was purchased by Australian interests and transferred to the stable of trainer Robert Hickmott, representing the ownership of Lloyd Williams, a prominent figure in Australian horse racing.
Almandin's victory in the 2016 Melbourne Cup was a notable achievement, securing his place in Australian racing history. He was ridden by jockey Kerrin McEvoy. Prior to his Melbourne Cup win, he had demonstrated form in lead-up races, indicating his suitability for the demanding two-mile distance. Following his Melbourne Cup win, Almandin continued to race, though he did not achieve the same level of success. He was eventually retired from racing.
