SS Cathay

The SS Cathay was a British passenger liner operated by the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O). Built by Barclay Curle & Company in Glasgow, Scotland, she was launched in 1924 and served primarily on P&O's routes between Britain and the Far East, including India, China, and Japan.

Cathay was a steam turbine-powered vessel, designed for both passenger and cargo transportation. She featured accommodations for first-class, second-class, and steerage passengers, catering to a diverse range of travelers. The ship was known for its elegant interiors and comfortable amenities, reflecting the standards of luxury expected on P&O liners of the era.

During World War II, Cathay was requisitioned by the British government for use as a troop transport. She carried soldiers and other personnel to various theaters of war. The ship was sunk on November 11, 1942, in the Mediterranean Sea by a torpedo from the German submarine U-455. Many lives were lost in the sinking, marking a tragic end to the Cathay's service. The sinking of the Cathay is remembered as one of the significant maritime losses of World War II.
