Allan Morrison (fur trader)

Allan Morrison (1753-1820) was a prominent fur trader and businessman in the Great Lakes region during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born in Scotland, he emigrated to North America and became involved in the lucrative fur trade, working primarily in the territory that would eventually become parts of Canada and the United States.

Morrison was affiliated with various trading companies, including the North West Company, a major competitor to the Hudson's Bay Company. He established trading posts and relationships with Indigenous peoples, notably the Ojibwe, to acquire furs such as beaver, otter, and fox. His business activities extended throughout the Lake Superior and Lake Michigan areas.

Beyond fur trading, Morrison also played a role in the early development of settlements. He contributed to the infrastructure and economy of burgeoning communities. His legacy includes his contributions to the economic landscape of the Great Lakes region and his interactions with Indigenous populations during a period of significant change and westward expansion. His descendants also became prominent figures in business and public life. He died in Montreal.
